Delicious Foods From Australia

Australia’s citizens tend to be friendly and relaxed, prioritizing fairness, equality, and respect above all else. When meeting people for the first time it is polite to greet them with a friendly “g’day” or “arvo,” and offer drinks, snacks or desserts when invited into someone’s home.
Foreign policy and national security usually take a backseat role in Australian elections; however, this election stands out due to its unusually volatile markets and dim security outlook.
Table of Contents
1. Meat Pies
Australia is famous for its delectable meat pies – handheld delicacies made with slow cooked chunky pieces of beef simmered in thick gravy that are loved by both tourists and locals.
This recipe does take some time, as the stew filling needs to cool before spooning it into individual pies, but it’s well worth your while as an enjoyable weekend project!
These pies pair beautifully with sides of veggies or mashed potatoes, with Vegemite as an optional extra for additional umami flavor.
2. Fish and Chips
Australians love visiting their local fish and chip shop (known as “chippy” or “chippies”). Nothing beats crispy fat-laden chips dusted with salt and vinegar!
Though typically associated with Britain, Greek migrant Athanasias Comino opened Australia’s inaugural fish and chips shop in 1879. Now an iconic dish across Australia, fish and chips is a frequent dinner choice for many families on Friday nights – especially as part of Friday Night Family Favourites! For best results when making authentic fish and chips dishes the key lies in using cold batter which clings tightly to hot oil for a crunchy crust.
3. Crab Pies
Australia loves seafood, so it should come as no surprise that a range of seafood pies has proliferated. From the healthy fish pie with piped potato to spectacular scallop and fennel number that features trevalla, prawns and clams as well as crispy lemon mashed topping, there’s something deliciously different available to satisfy everyone.
Bring a large saucepan filled with salted water to a boil. Place two crabs of equal weight into it, calculate cooking times according to recipe, drain while keeping coral intact and set aside to cool before setting back into fridge for later consumption.
4. Beetroot Pattie
Beetroot patties offer an excellent way to add nutrition and taste to a meat-based burger recipe! Juicy, nutritious and delectable all in one.
Beetroot Supports Heart Health: Nitric oxide produced from beetroot’s nitrates converts into better blood flow, lowers high blood pressure, and boosts exercise performance.
Boiled the beetroot and potato until soft. Combine with chopped dill and breadcrumbs before shaping into patties with semolina coating them before cooking – enough for 10-12 patties that you can serve either hot or cold!
5. Chocolate Frogs
Frog in a Pond is an iconic Australian children’s party food consisting of jelly and chocolate frogs. First introduced by MacRobertson’s chocolate company in 1930 and eventually included as part of Cadbury product range by 1967, its recipe remains much the same today.
Researchers have recently discovered a new tree frog species living in New Guinea’s swampy lowland rainforests: Litoria mira is closely related to Australia’s green tree frog but features a chocolate hue instead.
6. Chinese Chicken
Australia still boasts many authentic Chinese restaurants, particularly in major cities, yet many of their offerings have become more fusion-y over time. Traditional glutinous rice dumplings may now contain South Asian curry instead of just white sauce while barramundi may come with herby olives as an appetizer or main.
As Chinese cuisine gained more traction, previously unfamiliar ingredients like tofu began making appearances in Australian restaurants. Tofu is made by curdling soymilk and shaping it into blocks with different textures before being compressed.
7. Thai Green Curry Pie
Queensland (commonly referred to as “The Sunshine State”) has recently experienced a La Nina weather event and cyclone, so I have been craving comfort foods like this Thai green curry pie. It’s an Asian fusion dish made of creamy aromatic Thai green curry wrapped up in short pastry with puff pastry topping. Quorn pieces can even be added for vegan friendly version! Preheat the oven to 200degC. Cut two 1cm strips from each pastry sheet and line two pie dishes or ovenproof bowls using them before adding your filling and topping. Press firmly around their rims then top using remaining pastry strips before adding your curry mixture before filling them full and topping off with remaining pastry strips from pastry sheets used earlier.
8. Bacon and Cheese Rolls
Bacon and cheese rolls are an enduring bakery classic in Australia, much like their counterpart pigs in blankets. Made of fluffy rolls topped with delicious ingredients such as bacon or cheese.
To create this recipe, you will require a large mixing bowl and baking trays. This recipe can be completed either conventionally or using the Thermomix (see full method in recipe card below).
Enjoy these savoury Australian bread rolls topped with creamy cheddar cheese and crisp pieces of bacon fresh from the oven, or freeze for lunchbox addition. Perfectly frozen-friendly as well.
