Bondi Beach Terror Attack
Helicopters hover overhead as forensic investigators comb over Sydney’s Bondi Beach, where two gunmen opened fire during a Jewish festival last Sunday, killing 15 people. Flowers lie scattered along a wall in one corner; other debris includes beach chairs, wads of towels, and children’s sandals scattered along the sand; shocked locals mill around nearby, clutching hands over their lips in shock.
Early this morning, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese held a national security meeting and declared the attack as terroristic in nature. He confirmed that Sajid Akram, 50, and his 24-year-old son Naveed – locals have named these two as potential shooters – weren’t part of a terror cell but were “clearly” motivated by extremist ideology; indeed they pledged allegiance to IS which flags were found in their car at Bondi Beach.
Police state that Sajid was granted a category AB firearm license, meaning he could possess weapons under certain conditions and was only permitted to carry pistols or rifles fitted with silencers. Meanwhile, Naveed held both shotgun and centrefire rifle licences, according to police.
Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s Foreign Minister, issued an ultimatum to Australia’s Penny Wong after the Bondi attack: stop antisemitic speech! Only then can Australians feel secure.
