1. The number of people in ICE detention without criminal convictions has nearly doubled.
ICE currently detains thousands of individuals across its detention centers, many of whom report abuse including inhumane conditions, violation of due process rights and medical neglect. NIJC and other organizations have filed Freedom of Information Act requests with ICE asking for more details regarding its use of solitary confinement for immigration detention purposes.
Public data released by ICE indicates that more immigrants booked during the last years of President Obama’s administration did not possess criminal convictions compared to previous times; and among those with convictions, many do not fit common conceptions of criminality – for instance nonviolent drug crimes and minor traffic offenses were the norm rather than exception.
Even though recent news releases about Los Angeles-area immigration detention raids emphasize criminals with serious records, local immigrant advocates report seeing more workers and longtime residents with no pending charges or convictions being detained this month than expected. This data points out the necessity of fundamentally altering detention policies for immigration purposes.
