1. Germany designates Alternative for Germany party as extremist

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has classified the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as extremist due to its anti-Muslim and xenophobic views. A 1,100-page report from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) supports their decision, sending shockwaves through Berlin politics and renewing calls for its outright prohibition. This announcement has caused political shockwaves as calls intensify for banning AfD membership altogether.

Authorities hope the measure will allow them to increase surveillance on AfD members, yet does not put it on equal footing with Neo-Nazi or terrorist organizations.

Civil servants who are AfD members could also be affected, since civil servants swear to uphold Germany’s liberal democratic basic order. Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla of AfD have accused the government of trying to discredit them ahead of a change in leadership that will see Friedrich Merz become chancellor next week.

2. President Trump keeps silent on Juneteenth

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers brought news of freedom to former slaves in Galveston, Texas more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. Barack Obama issued annual Juneteenth proclamations and celebrated it annually with concerts on his South Lawn lawn.

Trump, however, remained relatively indifferent this year. Instead, in an opinion piece published on 2025 Truth Social post he expressed that there are too many holidays and claimed they cost the economy billions since businesses must close for celebrations.

Last year, Trump caused alarm among Black leaders when he scheduled an initial rally for June 19, also known as Freedom Day. Later he changed the date. Trump even claimed he made Juneteenth famous without actually knowing its meaning or significance.

3. A small plane crashes

An aircraft carrying four people was involved in an accident near Raleigh Executive Jetport Monday and is under investigation by both the NTSB and FAA.

Weather can be one of the primary contributors to small plane accidents. A storm that might only cause mild turbulence on a 747 can turn deadly when experienced in a Cessna. Spatial coordination becomes chaotic; up appears down; terror ensues and control may be lost by both pilot and aircraft.

Weather may be one of the main contributing factors to small plane accidents; however, poor situational awareness, poor maintenance practices and preflight planning are often just as significant. At Danko Meredith we understand how difficult it can be for injury victims or the families of those lost due to plane crashes, and are committed to helping them make a full recovery.

4. Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband are murdered

Friday afternoon at the Capitol Rotunda in Minnesota, Melissa Hortman and Mark Hortman’s children buried them after Vance Boelter appeared in court and was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one attempt. Boelter is facing two second-degree murder counts and an attempted murder count related to their deaths.

Police were informed of a shooting at Boelter’s Brooklyn Park home and upon arriving found him holding a weapon to an open doorway before fleeing on foot, exchanging fire with officers before finding their victims dead inside.

Governor Tim Walz said in a statement that the Hortmans were killed in “a politically motivated assassination.” They had helped champion Minnesota as an asylum for women fleeing restrictive states seeking abortion services and for laws protecting providers of these services.

5. The National Weather Service warns of high humidity

After deadly flooding in Kerrville, Texas has caused renewed scrutiny of the National Weather Service. While some independent meteorologists claim the agency did not adequately communicate the severity of the storm, others argue it’s difficult to anticipate extreme rain and flooding and warnings were timely.

NOAA officials report they are working hard to fulfill their core mission despite budget and staff reductions imposed by President Donald Trump’s administration. NOAA has adjusted to their circumstances by prioritizing field offices and weather balloon releases for operational improvement, said their spokesperson.
