India’s bridge collapse

A bridge collapsed over a river in western India, causing several deaths due to heavy rainfall that caused its waters to increase significantly.

Reports indicate that tourists were seen on the narrow bridge ignoring warning signs. As a result, government has issued an apology and promised financial aid for families of victims.

But the announcement has generated criticism from some who feel that it does not go far enough. Maharashtra state Chief Minister addressed this in a post on social media platform X. He explained that some individuals had become lost due to “some people getting swept away”, with search operations currently taking place urgently.

Harvard’s international students

Harvard is home to an international student body, but the Trump administration is trying to limit their enrollment so as to exercise greater control over Harvard policies and curriculum.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem issued an unprecedented order that requires Harvard College no longer enroll new international students, while current international students must transfer out or risk losing their visa status. This decision comes in response to Harvard’s failure in confronting violence and anti-Semitism on campus.

This move could have dire repercussions for world-renowned research universities like Harvard, whose students play an instrumental role in furthering American science and technology.

Los Angeles’ police shootings

Los Angeles police department reported an increase of 10% officer-involved shootings and 22% increase in significant uses of force compared to 2023, as compared with last year.

Black people were overrepresented among fatal and non-fatal shooting incidents relative to their share of population, as evident by both Use of Force data and hospital statistics.

Video shows that while walking alone in South Los Angeles, a woman was shot with what is referred to as “less lethal” ammunition by officers responding to reports about an abusive partner using firearms against their girlfriend and possibly being suicidal.

Britain’s MI6 spy agency

The Secret Intelligence Service, commonly referred to as MI6, is Britain’s foreign intelligence service. They recruit human agents to spy on other nations while simultaneously countering potential spies within Britain.

Outgoing MI6 Chief Sir Richard has warned of unprecedented challenges facing MI6, such as threats posed by Russia, China and Iran; non-state actors like al-Qaeda; as well as threats posed by hostile nations like Russia. He appointed Blaise Metreweli to lead MI6.

Metreweli will become the first woman ever to hold this position in MI6’s 116-year history. Currently serving as its Director of Technology and Innovation – similar to Q in Bond movies – she will take over her existing boss this autumn.

President Trump’s immigration enforcement

The president is using his executive authority to implement his campaign promise of the “largest mass deportation program ever seen.” To fulfill this agenda, he has reallocated law enforcement resources away from important crimes investigations in favor of mass deportations efforts.

Mr. Trump has targeted cities that limit cooperation with ICE, and has deployed thousands of military and National Guard troops to execute his immigration policies. Additionally, he is changing the immigration court system by restricting legal representation access and speeding up cases while terminating key pathways towards legal status.
