1. Iran’s missile strikes

Unfortunately, Iran’s capacity for external retaliation has been severely depleted after years of conflict in Gaza and last year’s fighting in Lebanon.

2. India’s bridge collapse

On Sunday afternoon at a popular tourist spot in Maharashtra state in western India, an age-old cable suspension bridge collapsed into a river, sending scores of people plunging into its depths, reports Press Trust of India.

A narrow footbridge was packed with tourists carrying two-wheelers despite its designation as unsafe and closed to vehicles. According to local authorities, warnings had been given about its risks but many chose to disregard them.

Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, advised people to remain out of the area until all safety has been assured. He applauded rescue teams’ efforts in finding survivors; so far six have been saved and search operations continue.

3. Harvard’s international students

After Harvard refused to meet the Trump administration’s demands, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued a threat that it may lose its Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification – meaning new students would no longer be admitted while existing international students must transfer schools or lose legal permission to stay.

Though President Donald Trump’s student visa strategy may have been blocked by courts, its effects will still ripple far beyond Harvard and undermine America’s global leadership in higher education and research. If his administration continues to target Harvard and other elite colleges like them, it will send a global signal that America is no longer welcoming or safe for students and scholars, potentially drawing immigrants away to other nations while harming American economic prospects.

4. Los Angeles’ anti-ICE protests

Activists across the nation have come together in cities across the United States to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. In Los Angeles, activists assembled outside of the federal building where ICE offices are housed; police and US marshals met them with arms raised as they marched in protest of these raids.

NBC News reports that most of the day was relatively peaceful for most attendees; however, tensions began to mount when some protesters began throwing fireworks and rocks at law enforcement officers and pepper balls were used against some protesters.

As a result of these clashes, a curfew was implemented from 9pm on Wednesday through 5am Thursday morning in Downtown LA. Police deployed in force against some protesters – arresting some while forcing others out – pushing back with force against other demonstrators, and several were eventually detained or were required to leave by force.

5. President Trump’s immigration enforcement

No matter their claims of national security, the actions taken by this administration threaten to divert local and state law enforcement and military resources away from fulfilling their core public safety and national security mandates. Furthermore, their use could expand an indiscriminate mass deportation mechanism while violating constitutional protections.

Furthermore, the Trump administration’s attacks on legal immigration harm families and communities throughout America. His deportation agenda disregards that people who have lived here legally for decades should not be targeted with deportations measures.

Instead, the Trump administration has focused on bullying states and cities by filing lawsuits, issuing threats of legal action without basis, and cutting funding for public safety programs administered by DOJ. This makes us less safe as federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies divert away from their core mission of holding individuals responsible for violent crimes such as murder, drug trafficking, or gun crime.
