Breaking News Today – Brisbane Homes Without Power
Thousands of homes in Brisbane are without power after a severe thunderstorm caused damage to powerlines. A severe weather warning was issued for SE Queensland and affected many parts of the state. Most of the south-east coast, the Darling Downs, the Granite Belt, and the Wide Bay region all were affected. The warning came after a strong trough crossed southern Queensland. The storms brought strong south-westerly winds and damaging lightning. There were reports of downed powerlines in the Gold Coast and Brisbane suburbs.
The power company Energex says some Brisbane homes will be without power for weeks. The company has restored power to around 10,000 premises and is planning to restore power to the remaining 5000 homes on Thursday. However, at this stage, there are still many areas without power, including the airport, traffic lights, schools, and hospitals. The energy companies are scrambling to restore power as quickly as possible. Depending on the area, some residents could still be without electricity for weeks.
There are no reports of injury or fatalities, but the power company is urging residents to reduce their power usage to prevent further damage to the powerlines. The company is aiming to restore power by 11pm. The cause of the outage is an underground fault at the North Head substation.
