1. Terrorism advisory bulletin
Today, AHA and Health-ISAC issued a joint advisory warning of a potential terrorist threat to the health care industry. A widely shared social media post could inspire individuals to act against health care institutions in the U.S. – particularly hospitals – by taking specific actions against them. They advised standard vigilance be maintained while any suspicious or threatening activity should be reported directly to local law enforcement, FBI Field Offices or Fusion Centers for investigation.
Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security has issued an updated National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin regarding an increased threat environment due to U.S. involvement in Israel-Iran conflicts and no specific or credible threats have been identified for our homeland.
The National Threat Analysis System Bulletin is an update to the Homeland Security Advisory System color-coded bulletin, intended to more effectively convey threat environments and inform Americans on ways they can contribute towards keeping our nation secure.
2. Kidney dialysis shooting
After the shooting of a UnitedHealthcare worker caused national outrage, many Americans were left wondering what had triggered Luigi Mangione. A Florida medical resident is facing charges of shooting a kidney specialist in Indiana as part of his obsession with dialysis industry’s lucrative profits and perceived injustices associated with dialysis treatments.
Dialysis companies have recently been hit with lawsuits, some of which they’ve settled; critics contend these settlements have not resulted in better care for patients.
Some scientists are working to make dialysis more cost-effective. One prototype weighs only 10 kilograms and requires very little water, potentially relieving family burden. Still, many hurdles exist. Still, doctors, bioengineers and entrepreneurs remain committed to revolutionizing dialysis treatments.
3. Juneteenth shooting
Over Father’s Day weekend, gun violence erupted in various incidents across multiple states. Two individuals were fatally shot at a Juneteenth event in Round Rock, Texas, while nine people including two children were injured in a splash pad playground shooting near Detroit.
Police believe the shooting took place following an argument between groups attending a free festival that turned violent, police announced. Around 10 p.m., shots rang out and quickly escalated with multiple people shooting at each other – some fired multiple rounds simultaneously at their target(s).
Since Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday a year ago, many Americans still aren’t familiar with its significance. Unfortunately, this ignorance hinders Black communities’ education and empowerment: Juneteenth serves to educate them about their history as well as its continuing effects. Stereotypes from slavery still haunt Black communities today – such as their intelligence being less. Racist policies result in high police killing rates and health disparities for black Americans.
4. Juneteenth holiday
June 19 marks a new federal holiday in the US: Juneteenth (a combination of “June” and “nineteenth”). This celebration takes place more than two months after the end of Civil War and more than two years since Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, when African American slaves in Galveston Texas first learned they were free.
Celebration of Black History Day has spread across the United States after it gained momentum within the Black Lives Matter movement in response to deaths of African American citizens such as George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others at the hands of law enforcement officers. It provides an opportunity to remember, reenact and celebrate Black history.
Celebrations for this holiday typically feature parades, family reunions and speeches as well as food with red hues such as barbequed meats and watermelons as well as beverages such as Kola Nut Tea (KNTT) or Hibiscus (HA-MY-ka) Tea that was brought over from Africa through slave ships enslaved peoples.
5. Tow truck worker killed
Daniel “DJ” Ortiz, 24, from Hopatcong was tragically killed when helping to recover a Honda passenger vehicle on Route 287 south in Harding Township when an SUV drove onto its shoulder and struck all three vehicles involved, state police reported.
DJ worked for a towing company that issued an emotional tribute on Facebook and requested drivers slow down and move over when encountering those working alongside the highway. Some states require motorists to slow down when approaching vehicles with flashing lights, and in many instances may require motorists to change lanes when coming across stopped vehicles with flashing lights.
Nelson Vargas of Ron and Sons Towing in Kenvil, Roxbury Township finds it distressing when cars crash into flatbeds at high speed. To reduce such instances from occurring again, he hopes to raise funds so each one of his tow trucks is equipped with seat belt cutters and tools capable of breaking car windows quickly should an accident occur.
