The team’s early years can be traced to the late 1800s, when many British and European migrants settled in the city. After the Second World War, these immigrants formed wealthy ethnic-based clubs that dominated the competitions of the 1960s and 1970s. This helped to create a perception that association football was an exclusively migrant sport. During this period, the game was sometimes referred to as wogball.
In 1999, Brisbane made their first appearance in the finals since merging with the Gold Coast Lions. But they lost to the eventual premiership Kangaroos in the preliminary final. They did reach the finals in 2000, but lost to Carlton by 82 points. In 2001, the Brisbane Lions fought back and played in the AFL Grand Final. These were the last times the club had reached the grand final.

Using a federal grant for sports funding may render the grant unconstitutional.
In 1884, Brisbane FC travelled to Ipswich for the first inter-club game in Queensland. With a crowd of 1000 supporters, Brisbane beat Ipswich FC by one goal to nil. However, the Victorian rules did not include behinds at that stage, and Ipswich went on to win their first ever home match. Brisbane FC were the first in the state to play a professional club, and the NRU was keen to recruit the acclaimed winger for its fledgling Australian Rules club.
The club’s youth team competes in the National Youth League. The women’s team competes in the W-League and NPL Queensland. The senior men’s team competes in the NPLQ-W division. The stadium is located in Raymond Park. There is a female contingent as well, with the club having one of the largest female supporters in the country. And while it is not yet official, the club’s history is a fascinating one.
Brisbane FC fielded their last match on August 1887, with a much diminished side against Excelsiors. The club didn’t participate in the remaining rounds of the QFA. The match was also the last one for Brisbane FC, as it planned to fold for the 1888 season. The club won the Queensland State Cup in 1993 and the Brisbane Cup in 1888. But, they didn’t fold and were not forced to continue.
During the early 1970s, ethnic-based clubs dominated the local league. Hollandia, formerly Azzurri, and Brisbane Lions were all part of this group. They were led by Argentinian national goalkeeper Osvaldo Borzi. In the early twentieth century, they were joined by a number of European migrants. Eventually, they formed a new team named Brisbane City.
Rangers Football Club was one of the first known football clubs to play the rules of association football in Brisbane. The first regular games didn’t take place until 1884. Its founding members included William Middlebrook, W. Wordie, and A. Irvine. Those players would later join the Anglo-Queensland Football Association. After two seasons, the team became a dominant force in the city.
In the 1990s, Brisbane Lions played in a league that merged with the Melbourne City Football League. The club was named after the Brisbane Lions and joined the national competition in 1997. It has a long and proud history of supporting the local community and competing at the highest level. The club was founded by three former Fitzroy Reds.
