The Brisbane Grammar School Experience

At BGS, students are supported by an exceptional student counselling team comprised of experienced child and adolescent psychologists as well as careers and tertiary pathway advisors.
An exciting extracurricular program includes visual and performing arts, chess, debating and special interest clubs and activities. Boys may also take part in adventure-based programs at the School’s Outdoor Education Centre at Moogerah.

Academics
BGS has long provided its students with a broad liberal education to prepare them for an ever-evolving world, in which change and diversity are constants. Academic excellence remains at BGS with many graduates going on to top Australian and international universities and making significant contributions in their chosen careers.
All boys enroll in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography and Physical Education classes along with modern language study (Chinese, French or Japanese). In addition, arts subjects including Music Drama Visual Art Design as well as Applied Thinking courses help boys hone their meta-strategic thinking abilities and dispositions.
At Gibson House School in Australia, co-curricular programs focus on leadership development through Gibson House model. Boys are given opportunities to explore their interests and hone their talents through participation in competitions in debating, public speaking and enterprise education. On its main campus there is Elizabeth Jameson Research Learning Centre and Cherrel Hirst Creative Learning Centre as well as 25m suspended swimming pool and McCrae Grassie Sports Centre – providing boys with ample opportunities for further personal and academic growth.
Sport
Brisbane Grammar School education has long been known for fostering excellence and an inclusive atmosphere, along with academic success. These qualities have formed the cornerstone of BGS education over its 150-year history.
Sport has always been an integral component of Grammar life, with our Old Boys becoming leaders both nationally and internationally in various sporting arenas – many becoming national team captains!
BGS boasts world-class sporting facilities. On campus, our Indoor Sports Centre features a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, an indoor cricket nets arena and an indoor nets cricket stadium; off campus at Northgate ovals complex serves cricket, rugby and soccer; with rowing program having its own boatshed on Brisbane River. Furthermore, BGS employs full-time Strength and Conditioning Coach and accesses an extensive network of specialist training facilities in nearby suburbs.
The Arts
BGS provides an outstanding Arts program, featuring a dedicated Arts precinct with a spacious music building and performance gallery. In addition, students participate in orchestras, stage bands, eight string ensembles, five choirs and three percussion ensembles that form student-led musical groups within this setting.
The School offers an annual theatre season featuring plays and musicals for boys to showcase their creative abilities in a supportive environment. Debating and public speaking clubs also exist at the School, in addition to enterprise education groups competing in external competitions.
Sport is an essential part of Brisbane Grammar School education, and boasts an illustrious roster of talented and well-rounded sportspeople such as Wallabies captain Stephen Moore – not only has he excelled on the rugby pitch, but has also managed to balance this success with business success and being an advocate for gender equality issues.
Extracurricular Activities
At our School, our academic program is supplemented by an expansive selection of cultural, sporting, and wellbeing pursuits designed to develop boys into men who possess a range of thinking skills that will enable them to successfully navigate an ever more complex world.
Participating in cocurricular activities promotes wellbeing, improves academic outcomes and facilitates community engagement at BGS. Students can select from an outstanding program of sports, music and drama activities; there are also special interest clubs and boarding-based activities.
Middle School students are challenged to maintain an array of interests throughout their education, in accordance with our motto ‘nil sine labore – nothing without work’. Harlin House serves as home base, offering doorstep access to indoor sports centres, music centres and The Lilley Centre (named in honour of former Premier and Chair of Board of Trustees Sir Charles Lilley). Furthermore, students enjoy full use of senior libraries and learning technology spaces.
