News Breakfast

News Breakfast is an Australian morning television program that airs on ABC TV and Australia Network. Featuring interviews and debate, news updates, sport coverage and weather forecasting updates as well as weekly highlights segment “Mad Week”, it is hosted by Paul Henry and Kathryn Robinson.

New South Wales (including Canberra and Tasmania), Victoria and Tasmania all year long receive live coverage, while Queensland experiences daylight saving delays of one hour during daylight savings and the Northern Territory during winter; it is also broadcast with a 30-minute delay throughout the year in South Australia as well as two-hour delays for daylight savings in Western Australia.

Josh Szeps’ departure was due to a perceived lack of meaningful, rational discussions around controversial issues; longtime finance presenter Madeleine Morris announced her exit shortly thereafter in January 2014. It was later confirmed by network Ten that their morning format would replace it from 30 September 2024 onwards.

Weekend Breakfast

Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s news division includes ABC News, which offers 24-hour national television news service as well as radio and online coverage of current affairs events and stories. Furthermore, several current affairs programs delve deeper into each story than standard news bulletins do.

This program originates from the ABC national studio in Ultimo, Sydney and airs both online and on ABC News channel. Current hosts of the show are Michael Rowland and Lisa Millar along with news presenter Bridget Brennan, sports presenter Tony Armstrong and weather presenter Nate Byrne.

Live transmission occurs year round in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Tasmania with only South Australia’s winter season experiencing one hour delay and three in Western Australia.


ABC Mornings program airs live from their national studio in Ultimo, Sydney and hosted by Loretta Ryan (weekdays) and Craig Zonca (weekends).

Mornings has seen its Queensland audience share decline by 0.6 per cent compared to 2015. Since 2015, ABC has implemented several changes intended to boost ratings.

Steve Austin spoke with Mercy Community CEO Mick de Brenni regarding their decision to shut down residential care, transition services, foster and kinship care and an asylum seeker centre in Brisbane due to lack of funds for staff salaries. They also discussed Claudia Goldin’s Nobel prize-winning research that suggests women may earn half as much overall despite working less hours over their lives.

State bulletins

The ABC provides its local bulletins via its iview video-on-demand service and regional radio networks like River 94.9 in Brisbane. National news programs can also be seen on ABC News channel as well as triple j, the national youth radio station.

David Anderson announced the cancellation of local Sunday night bulletins as part of a major restructuring plan to transition the ABC towards digital-first operations, cutting 120 jobs — among them numerous journalists – as part of this massive restructure plan.

Matt Wordsworth hosts the 7pm Queensland Bulletin Monday through Friday and Jessica van Vonderen on weekends, simulcast on commercial radio stations across Queensland as well as remote Australia through WIN Network and Imparja Television WIN is also produced in Sydney with national airing on ABC News channel.

National bulletins

Nine’s national news program, 9News, blends local and national news and information with international and domestic current affairs programs for an hour-long bulletin that airs in Sydney as well as regional NSW studios (in Sydney), Northern Victoria studios, Queensland regional composite bulletins or regional composite bulletins.

Regional Victorian and Queensland bulletins are broadcast daily at 5 am (weekdays), presented by Jo Hall with sport presenter Nathan Currie and weather presenter Sonia Marinelli, until February 2018 when Jonathan Uptin co-presented these bulletins alongside Samantha Heathwood.

National news is supplemented with popular current affairs programs like Afternoon Briefing, 7.30, Four Corners, Landline and Q&A; in addition, various special news and current affairs programs are produced nationally.
